star32 About Us

“Funky Moves are the kindest hearted, sweetest natured, happiest and classiest dance teachers.”

Emma Freud & Richard Curtis

Funky Moves was founded in 2005 by professional dancer Alice Thorpe. Her love and enthusiasm for dance and its benefits for everyone, were her inspirations for starting the company. The focus is on making dance accessible to all through award winning classes, parties, classes, holiday courses and events. A fun and vibrant teaching style is what defines the company and is the reason everybody love Funky Moves.

‘Dance is an expression of creativity and individuality in a world where we are generally only measured on our academic achievements. It is a form of communicating, connecting, increasing confidence, fitness, coordination, balancing the mind, releasing tension and best of all, it’s fun! Who wouldn’t want to dance?!’

Alice Thorpe

Founder and Director

As the founder and creator of Funky Moves, Alice understands the vision of the business better than anyone and thus is in charge of ensuring its aims and objectives are being met at all times. She oversees all staff training to ensure Funky Moves teaching remains at the top of its game and can often be seen popping in to classes to see how everyone is getting on! Alice ensures the soulful, fun and passionate vibe of the company trickles down to everyone we come in contact with and is the mum to our big Funky Family.

Alice started dancing at the age of 3 and is a trained ballet, contemporary and street dancer, earning a first class honours in her Dance Performance degree at Middlesex University. Alice then moved on to London Contemporary Dance School with a scholarship while also being accepted in to National Youth Dance Company 2001/2002. After graduating from LCDS, Alice performed with many contemporary companies around the UK and Portugal, as well as appearing in music videos including Calvin Harris ‘The Girls, and dancing for Roni Size and Marti Pellow… She has also worked with Dance for camera and the films have been shown at the Tokyo Film and Dance Festival as well as at The Big Chill Festival.

With a lifetime’s dancing, two children and over a decade of running Funky Moves, it’s admirable that Alice’s passion for inspiring kids through dance keeps continuing to grow every day. She is hard working, sassy and super smiley!
