There comes a time when the inevitable words leave your little one’s lips and leave you feeling cold… “Mum, go away, you’re embarrassing me”… “Dad, can you drop me round the corner from the school so my friends don’t see you”… “Mum, stop dancing, you look so old!” Some of you might be lucky enough to be one of those super cool parents who share shoes with their teenagers and can beat their sons at FIFA – but for most of us, it’s a constant battle of providing discipline, whilst still remaining their best friends.
A mother mentioned to me last month, at a private class I teach for her four year old daughter and her friends, that her little girl has already used the phrase “Stop dancing mum, you’re embarrassing me.” So it got me thinking, how could Funky Moves help in breaking down that embarrassment barrier and truly encourage kids and their parents to share silly, smiley and quality time together through dance? How could we help to discourage kids from being self-conscious of themselves and their parents when being creative, and instead, fire them up to let loose and let go of their inhibitions! We already pride ourselves on developing freestyle skills in all our classes and parties, so children begin to understand how important it is to understand the way their own body moves, as oppose to simply executing the moves correctly. Self expression is so important. But what about if the parents were involved in that too? Another mother had mentioned in our Adult Classes that she would love to be able to be in a class with her daughter so that she could see how she progresses through a class, interacts with other kids and her Funky Moves teacher. Then the orange penny dropped! If parents are always curious about their children in class… and children are unfortunately, more self-conscious around their folks – it’s time to breakdown the divide and get the mums, dads, sons and daughters all dancing together! With Mothers’ Day just around the corner, it seemed the perfect opportunity to offer it out to the mums first, so that’s what we’ve done. We’ve seen you mums up dancing at the end of term, or bopping in the corner as you come to collect the kids on a Saturday… we’ve even danced with some of you at our Adult Classes on a Tuesday and Friday morning. It’s well and truly time to dust off your dancing shoes and boogie alongside your children in our MOTHERING WEEKEND DANCE CLASS SPECIAL!
